Because someone will enjoy them…

I admit that I have had this great dilemma this Winter…
Do I go ahead with my planting plans the way I had them mapped out in the Fall before Daryl was laid off or do I hold off until we know where we are heading?  Oh the dilemma!
I waited and held off somewhat…
Planted the rye in the big field figuring whether I used it or not I needed to give back to the soil what our garden took from it last Summer.
It was the right thing to do whether I grew on that land or not this year.

But do I start my seeds or not?  After all we are officially about 7-8 weeks out from our last frost.
It’s time to get those seedlings started…
But how many?  How much do I invest knowing that we may not be here?
Not knowing what the months ahead is a bit tough for a gal who lives for the Spring and Summer planting seasons.
Here is what I landed on…
I started peppers, poppies, delphinium, dill, cilantro, basil and a few other random flowers…
For now.

We will enjoy watching them get their start in the world…

We shall plant them for the next person who will love them if we have to leave…
We will put in the kitchen garden out back just like every year…
And I will hold off on planting out on the farm until we know where we are ending up because I don’t want to leave that big of a plot of land in gardening shambles if I have to desert it…that would break my heart.
Grow little plants grow!:-)

We question everything…

Homeschooling…you can feel like a real weirdo sometimes when you decide to do this thing called “homeschooling”.
You question everything…
Are we messing up?
Will they learn everything they need to know?
Will they be “weird”?  If they are do I really care?
Are they missing out?

Over the last 5 years we have never been more confident in our decision to homeschool.  It has simply fit our families needs perfectly.
Being with your child all day long everyday leads to several things but the single most important for me…
I know more about my tweens than I ever would have if they went to regular school.  There really isn’t a debate on that.
I am with them all day.
We rarely if ever fight…
I know that sounds strange but I really think the reason would be that we give them this freedom to just “be who they are”.
I remind myself about a million times a day “Is this your interest or theirs?”  By allowing them to have 2-3 hours every day to “go down the rabbit hole” and learn what THEY want to learn and have a real interest in I am amazed everyday by what THEY chose to learn.
No me telling them “YOU HAVE TO LEARN THIS!”
Real learning…retaining learning happens on this insane level when it is something THEY want to actually learn.
I was reminded once again this week just how clear it is that we have raised “natural learners” at this point.
They have this freedom and happiness that comes from it to learn what they want…at their level.  Not forced or pushed.
Of course we do the standard boring things each morning…reading, history, science, math etc… but truly those do not take a full 7-8 hours they would need in traditional school (add in another 1-2 hours of worksheets and homework).  That leaves half a day!

Yesterday when I went to check on their afternoon rabbit hole learning I found Adam clicking away on the computer…
See Adam is his fathers guts.
He is NOT a sports boy…that was hard for us…but sports are not what he enjoys.
There was this time where we had to accept he would never be the football player or skateboarder Daryl was…
We had to decide how much time on a computer was “ok”?
We came to this conclusion…an athlete is allowed to spend 2-3 hours a day practicing his art.  He is cheered on…told he is great…
Our traditional school system often gives athletes just about everything and anything they need.  They are golden.
But what about the computer kid?
The kid that could actually change the world around him via what they create not what they do on a field…
We decided that it would not ruin him to spend 2-3 hours a day on his computer BUT the rules are:
we have open access to his history…
He must be studying how to create something…
Watching Youtube videos on programming are ok…
Creating plugins for Minecraft and running his server biz are fine as well…
Playing video games does not count during this time period..he must be working.

I walk in yesterday to find him teaching himself Java coding….oh for the love of GOD!!
My 12 year old was running his first java program (or whatever you call it because it is far over my head)…jaw on ground.
This is real learning.  Freedom to learn what he wants to truly learn.
The smile on his face…priceless.

Touchdown!

His generation needs coding skills!!
They are right up there with Math…actually he is now more interested in his math lessons more than ever since he needs those sharp math skills for coding.
It is this big learning circle.  He is interested so he dives in.  His choice.

The next time your child wants to “play” on the computer…perhaps they are learning more than you would ever expect:-)

A few of his favorite learning spots this week…
Brandonio Productions

Anything by Mojang especially these weekend bashes they have where they show how they create a video game..live stream!

You know what they say about good neighbors….

“A bad neighbor is a misfortune…
As much as a good one is a great blessing.”
~Hesiod

One day last week I finally decided it was time to go ahead and get the kitchen garden all dug up (or at least a 9×9 section of it for cold crops).

It was looking pretty shabby and unloved….
So I took Lucas (aka “my helper”) and we got to digging..

Well or not so much….

So after an hour of struggling sweet George…oh sweet George…gotta love neighbor George!
He came to my rescue…

I promptly fired Lucas but he had fun watching Mr.George…

Good neighbors are priceless…thanks George!!!:-)

Jalapeño Popper Dip (Gluten Free version)

I have a big love affair going with this dip right this minute.
Thought you guys may enjoy making it as well…super easy!

Getting straight to the point…

Ingredients:

2 (8oz) Cream Cheese blocks
1 cup of GF mayo (most are but you always have to read those labels)
4-6 fresh jalapeno’s (leave seeds in for super spicy…take them out for milder dip)
Handful of diced green onions
1 cup of cheddar cheese
1 cup of mozzarella
6-8 slices of bacon
Crushed corn flakes
1/2 stick of butter

Throw the cream cheese and mayo in a big old bowl….

Chop up the Jalapeno’s and start cooking that bacon!

Chop up some green onions…

Throw in the cheese and blend it all up…

I like to chop up the bacon in the food processor…

I put half  back in the cream cheese mixture and half sprinkled on top.
Spread the cream cheese mixture out in a baking pan…
And grab out the corn flakes…

I put a handful of corn flakes into a ziploc bag…
I grab a glass and crush the heck out of those things!

Sprinkle the remaining bacon and corn flake crumbs onto the top and then pour the melted buter all over the top…

Yum!!

I cook it in the oven on 350 until the top gets a lovely golden brown.
Enjoy the yummy craziness that is this dip!

Carpet Freshener without all the chemicals…

What’s not to love about that?!

I absolutely HATE chemical air fresheners.
First off I wish people would take the time to learn what chemicals they are actually spraying/adding into there home under the impression that somehow they are “freshening” or “sanitizing” the air.
Think I am being a bit dramatic?  Take the time to read this and then decide if you want this stuff in your home with your children inhaling it all day long.

All that said… I am a girl who still likes her home to smell nice.
Seriously…I love a good smelling home.
What is a girl to do?
It’s an easy fix and cheap too.

Grab a bunch of Baking soda and add in your favorite essential oil until the smell is as strong or mild as you like it.

I have had this box of cat litter freshener for years and now all we do is find a piece of paper and make it a funnel…
Add in the new baking soda mixture with the essential oil blended in.
It’s a very fancy method;-)

So how do I use this lovely freshener?

  • The kitty litter box
  • Sprinkle it lightly on carpet and vacuum it up
  • Sprinkle it lightly on the furniture when it gets a bit musty (we have very old furniture…lol!)… vacuum it or beat it into the fabric.
  • It can even be used in the laundry…I add a little bit in with the sheets to give it a lovely lavender smell.
  • The diaper pail

I have a thing for lavender and tea tree oil but you can really use any oil you love.
It may not work on every surface, couch or fabric but you can use your digression to figure out what it might work on best in your home.
If you would like to make an oil burner it is super easy to use essential oils with those as well!
