I keep a little bit of my soul in the Outer Banks…especially places like Pea Island …Jockeys Ridge …any pier in the Outer banks…
I was 13 years old the first time I finally got a formal introduction to the ocean.
It was love at first site.
I have had this love affair going ever since. When Daryl and his family introduced me to the Outer Banks 20 years ago it quickly became a second home. Literally. His parents have a second home there.
We have been so blessed that they have shared this treasure with all of us over the years.
We go down….alot. Monthly during the warmer months…as a retreat away from everything in the Winter.
My children have had this blessed, magical childhood being allowed to go a bit Lord of the Flies each Summer on the beaches.
Pea Island is my favorite. Because it has everything I look for in a beach.
The kids…the dogs…the parents…we all take a deep breath and can feel like we are the only ones on the planet.
We have even had our Molly’s (our beloved lab) funeral on Pea Island…because it was her favorite place in the world.
I think everyone should have such places in life.
A place you can rest your soul and rejuvenate your spirit….just “be”.
I wish this for everyone.
It’s truly part of “finding happy”.
Today I am sad though…because my soul place was hit crazy bad by Sandy.
No doubt they will rebound…they just don’t make people as tough as they are on the Outer Banks.
My hope is that my Pea Island is still there enough for us to go back to…as of right now she is one very “free and wild” beach.
The road…the access gone. When will it be rebuilt? My guess would be by Summer but one of these days I know they will stop “rebuilding” it and just give up.
Until then my thoughts and prayers are with everyone who has been hit by this storm.
